In addition to Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway or Icy Strait Point, you will begin or end your journey in Whittier. There, you’ll have extra time to soak up expansive views of rich greenery and striking mountains. Or, discover authentic Native Alaskan culture as you stroll through this four-time All-American City. See the Great Land’s most famous animals — like humpback whales — on our Alaska shore excursions. Or keep a lookout for Denali National Park’s Big Five — including moose, caribou, grizzly bears, wolves and Dall sheep — while on a bus tour in the park. Princess Cruises has a wide selection of itineraries, 19 in total across 7 ships.

Others were just starting their vacations, but I was already deep into exploring, and ready to continue. One great thing about the Royal Princess is the ability to order coffee and breakfast the night before. Each day, you can fill out a form listing what items you’d like to order and what time they should be delivered, so that’s convenient. After relaxing, cruisers can head to The Enclave, a getaway of thermal suites and a hydro-therapy pool with a cascading rain shower and therapeutic air jets. Sweat out your worries at a Turkish-style steam bath, steam rooms, and dry saunas for purification and detoxification, then doze off on the heated stone beds or relaxing water beds.

At 669,000 acres and decorated by one of the four major ice caps in the United States, Kenai Fjords National Park is a sight to be seen. The Harding Icefield, expanding over 700 miles in length, paints the park white and feeds the glaciers that surround the crystalline fjords. Regal humpback whales leap out of the waters while seals draped over rocks bask in the sun.

Great experiences from the great land

Most Princess Alaska cruisetours include a tour into Denali National Park. Sailing past them is a sensory experience that inspires both the mind and heart. Watch as Hubbard Glacier calves into the water and listen for the rumble of “white thunder” that it leaves in its path.

Learn tips and tricks on how you can take your own frameable Alaska snapshots. As a part of North to Alaska, guests will be treated to an onboard demonstration that reveals the life and adventures of your host, an actual Alaskan lumberjack. They groan, creak and shudder on their march to the sea, punctuated by the booms and crashes of "white thunder" — a sound that echoes across the water when ice calves into the ocean below. On an Alaska cruise, let us show you Glacier Bay National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier.

With glaciers, waterfalls, misty mountains, and otters and whales frolicking in the waves, it would be a crime not to take it all in. Cut from age-old glacial movements, Endicott Arm is a narrow fjord over thirty miles long. Sailing down it gives you a view into some of the most dramatic vistas in the north.

You will also travel by rail in a private Princess Cruises scenic railroad car and by tour bus to the various locations. As if to answer me, the telltale poof of water shot out of the sea, followed by the dark, subtle hump of the whale as he followed alongside our massive 1,083-foot long ship. Find out what it takes to capture some of the best images the Great Land has to offer, from the very photographers who took them. Our North to Alaska program welcomes award-winning photographers Mark Kelly, Carl Johnson, Daryl Pederson and Kim Heacox on board to share their Alaska photography experiences.

Tips for choosing excursions with Princess Cruises

In this oasis, cruise through the unspoiled water and relish in the artistry of Mother Nature. Feel like a local with our unique land and shore excursions that give you a taste of true Alaska life. From the historical fortunes of the Klondike Gold Rush to the glacial treasures of the Inside Passage, get up close to the Great Land’s famous riches and best kept secrets. With national parks and four of North America’s tallest mountains, Alaska’s wilderness has been preserved for generations. Denali National Park is larger than Vermont and home to the highest peak on the continent.

Then, when I got to the coastal towns on the cruise, I was able to appreciate them for their quaint charm. I also saw a lot more wildlife on the land portion, which meant any animals I saw during the cruise were just a bonus. While Alaska’s natural sites are not necessarily moving around in the same way the animals do, the constantly changing weather means a lot is left up to chance. During our tour, we were part of the unlucky 70 percent of visitors who didn't get to see the mountain Denali since it was constantly shrouded in clouds.

On a cruise to Alaska, live a nature lover's dream in the land where guests can catch postcard-worthy sights. We have a 50-year legacy of sharing the best places and experiences with our guests. On an Alaska cruise, unpack once and explore glaciers, wildlife and national parks. Most Alaska cruises start or end in Vancouver, and it’s definitely worth adding on some time in the British Columbia city. Pop into local jewelry and artist shops and feast on warm pot pies on Granville Island, and admire the antique Gastown Steam Clock as you stroll through the waterfront neighborhood’s charming red-bricked streets.

You can also tour the city by kayak, floating under the centennial footbridge and enjoying the still waters of Chena River. Over in Pioneer Park lies a wonderland of activities for parents and children of any age. Saddle up on the antique carousel, try your hand at disc golf or taste delicacies plucked from Fairbanks’ waters — like fresh Alaska salmon. Icy Strait Point is home to the remote Tlingit village of Hoonah, home to fewer than 800 people and a deep Native history. The nearby Spasski River Valley holds one of the world’s largest populations of brown bears, who are often found hunting for salmon in the rivers.

Valdez is situated in Prince William Sound and serves as the gateway to the interior of Alaska. Often referred to as the "Little Switzerland", Valdez is known for its breathtaking panorama of snow-capped mountains and glaciers. It is also well-known for its role in the transportation of crude oil from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, which ends in Valdez.

At the water’s edge are massive valley glaciers and dozens of smaller monuments that dot the mountainous region. Thanks to the professors who first settled here in 1899, many of these glaciers are named after the country’s best institutions of higher learning, such as Harvard Glacier. Remove the hassle from air travel and give yourself the gift of flexibility, time and a thicker wallet with Princess EZair flights.

I can’t wait for my next cruise adventure and am so glad I went during the summer. I enjoyed learning about the history of Totems and their significance in passing down stories across generations and about the Tlingit Nation. I 100% recommend splurging on a helicopter tour over glacial planes and fjords in Juneau. Paired with a dog sledding experience on this particular excursion, it is definitely bucket list worthy. I am still on cloud nine after some of my tours with Princess Cruises. Here are some I recommend out of the ones I tried, as well as any I would definitely choose the next time.

See the Alaska glaciers of Endicott Arm, including Dawes Glacier, and revel in the walls of ice that stretch stories above the waterline. Or delight in the cliffsides that are decorated with forests and wildlife. In partnership with Discovery™, our North to Alaska program brings you television content from Discovery™ and Animal Planet. Look out for exhibits on board featuring unique facts on the wildlife, terrain, history and adventures of Alaska. And Panning for Gold, along with episodes of Deadliest Catch and The Klondike mini-series will be featured. With Cook My Catch excursions, experience the pinnacle of fresh seafood.

Or cast your rod into Kenai River, one of the most popular destinations for fishing in Alaska, and reel in your own souvenir. Alaska national parks, stunning wildlife and natural diversity have been preserved with great effort so they may continue to be enjoyed by visitors and locals alike. In partnership with the Glacier Bay National Park Rangers and the Discovery Channel, kids and teens can explore their adventurous side with activities such as our Jr. Ranger Program, totem pole decorating and the Deadliest Catch Crab Sort Challenge for the ultimate Alaska cruise experience. Elias National Park is home to nine of the 16 highest peaks in the United States. Snow blankets the rocky topography, adding even more character to this national treasure.
